Understanding the $1 Million Limit

Under FEMA and RBI's Master Direction on NRO accounts, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) are permitted to remit up to USD 1 million per financial year from their NRO account balances (including sale proceeds of property, rent, dividend, pension, etc.) without requiring special RBI approval. (The Liberalised Remittance Scheme is a separate, resident-only facility and does not apply to NRIs.)

To repatriate these funds to an NRE account or an overseas account, you must typically provide:

  • Form 15CA: A declaration of remitter, submitted online.
  • Form 15CB: A certificate issued by a Chartered Accountant verifying that appropriate taxes have been paid on the funds being transferred.
